As Sustainability Director, I began annually completing this assessment about four years ago. While Peak Design excelled in some areas, we faltered in others. What’s commendable about B Corp is that they require companies to address all areas of business, not just a few.
The certification is rooted in a robust assessment that analyzes every aspect of a business: governance, workers, customers, community, and the environment.
Four years ago we began seriously addressing social and environmental concerns associated with our business practices. While we have made tremendous progress in that time and viewed ourselves as a responsible business, much of what we did was not codified in policies and procedures. This lack of formality is something we are generally proud of at Peak. It’s helped us operate and innovate efficiently and effectively. We debated the value of going through the B Corp certification process when we believed we were already a “good” company and didn’t need a logo to prove that.
Peak Design can always be improving, and B Corp provides a thorough framework for assessing all facets of our business - including many we had never considered.
Formalizing our efforts allows us to better track and continually improve our performance. In addition to bettering ourselves, we also believe it's important to throw our weight behind growing the B Corp movement. Consumers should have the ability to vote with their dollars by purchasing from responsible brands. Businesses should feel the economic heat to clean up their acts.
We are proud to display our B Corp certification badge alongside our 1% For The Planet membership badge and Climate Neutral Certified badge. We believe a responsible company accounts for the wellbeing of its employees, the total impact of its carbon footprint, and the stewardship of its environment. And of course, makes the best product.
Peak Design is thrilled to be joining the B Corp community, but we're even more excited about the continued work ahead. See you out there.
