Two weeks ago we announced the public premiere of Grizzly Country, a short film produced in partnership with Ben Moon about legendary eco-warrior, Doug Peacock.
Vietnam veteran, author, grizzly expert, godfather of monkeywrenching, the man who inspired Edward Abbey's famous character, George Hayduke. Some people love him. Some people hate him. But one thing's for certain: he's done all that he can to keep wild places wild.
Sometimes with the help of bolt cutters.
Doug is one of the last old guard eco-warriors - one who experienced an American wilderness unlike the one today...a wilder wilderness. It was time spent there, and the purpose he found in protecting a dwindling number of grizzlies, that saved his life from incapacitating PTSD after serving in Vietnam.
Doug has spent more time than anyone tracking and observing grizzlies in their natural habitat, becoming one of the foremost grizzly experts. In 2017, when the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service proposed rescinding the grizzlies’ protected status and re-allowing trophy hunting, Doug filed a lawsuit challenging it.
This past fall, a judge ordered that grizzlies be restored to protected status, stating:
The [U.S. Fish and Wildlife] Service failed to make a reasoned decision…when it delisted the Greater Yellowstone grizzly. By refusing to analyze the legal and functional impact of delisting on other continental grizzly populations, the Service entirely failed to consider an issue of extreme importance. Moreover, the Service’s analysis of the threats faced by the Greater Yellowstone grizzly segment was arbitrary and capricious. —U.S. District Judge Dana L. Christensen
The impact of climate change on the bears' food sources and diminishing habitat continue to threaten the longterm survival of these iconic creatures. The real issue though, is greater than the grizzlies. It's what their plight signifies - the irreplaceable loss of life-sustaining habitat for all living things, including humans.
Grizzlies and homo sapiens evolved out of the same habitats and still walk the common path. With the beast of climate change ravaging the earth, the mingled fates of men and bears are sealed. —Doug Peacock
In other words, if we don't get our act together in regard to climate change, what becomes of grizzlies will also become of us.
Doug's dogged persistence fighting for wild causes inspires us. We wanted to produce Grizzly Country to share Doug's wisdom on understanding, appreciating, and ultimately protecting the natural world. We were lucky to work with Ben Moon and a remarkable production team to bring this monkeywrencher's manifesto to life.
